Sylvia Marie Lockett

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sylvia Marie Lockett, a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend who peacefully passed away in her sleep after a long illness on Monday, May 12, 2025 in Vallejo, California at the age of 86. Sylvia was born on November 29, 1938, to Lillian Mitchell and Eugene Vance in New Orleans, Louisiana. Later, Lillian Mitchell would marry Milton Simmons who raised Sylvia as his own. She graduated from Clark High School before attending Booker T. Washington LPN school. She began her career at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and later moved to Chicago, Illinois to pursue further her nursing education at Provident Nursing School, from which she graduated in 1965 becoming a registered nurse. She then continued her work at Highland Hospital after moving to Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland, CA where she met her future husband, George Lockett whom she would remain his wife for the next 49 years, until her passing. They later moved to Vallejo, CA where Sylvia worked at Kaiser Permanente Hospital for over 20 years, ultimately retiring from her role. Sylvia was an active and dedicated member of Revival Center Ministries for more than 40 years, serving as an usher and a deaconess. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed being part of the Nubian Sisters Book Club. One of her proudest moments was going on a missionary trip to Haiti with her church. Sylvia loved photography, gardening, and shopping, and was always quick to lend a hand or offer a smile to those around her. She also cherished her travels with her husband, George, and daughter, Andrea, visiting destinations like Paris, Italy, and various cities across the United States. Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Lillian Simmons, her brother, Stephen, and her sister Sharon. Sylvia is survived by her loving husband, George Lockett, daughter Andrea, and siblings Sandra, Selwyn, and Sidney. She will be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A viewing will be held at the funeral home located at 524 Capitol Street, Vallejo, CA. on Wednesday, June 04, 2025 from 3 PM to 6 PM. Her funeral service will be held at the funeral home also on Thursday, June 05, 2025 at 11 AM. A repast will follow at Temple Baptist Church located at 1950-1960 Carlson Blvd., Richmond, CA. Sylvia's burial will take place at a later date. The family would like to extend special thanks to all who have offered their support during this time, especially the deaconesses of Revival Center Ministries, the Nubian Sisters Book Club, and Way of Grace Bible Church of Rancho Cordova, CA, Temple Baptist Church of Richmond, CA, and Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home.
